Apprentice Lineworker

The Apprentice Lineworker program emphasizes developing the skills to be a successful lineworker (overhead and underground). Apprentices must complete a training program that includes coursework, on-the-job training and some travel for field training. The program is normally a five-year series of progressive training positions during which the employee is on probation in accordance with Village policy. Employees failing to progress through the apprenticeship program will be terminated. Apprentice Lineworkers will be trained in overhead, conventional underground and Underground Residential Distribution electric systems. This position will assist other employees in performance of assigned tasks and with the installation, expansion, relocation, repair and maintenance of facilities and service to residents. In addition to normal line work, apprentice lineworkers will also support the construction, operation and maintenance of the water distribution system as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
A minimum of six months experience with a line crew in the construction and maintenance of electric distribution systems is desirable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Some knowledge of the use of hand tools, power tools and motorized equipment.
Ability to read, clearly speak and legibly write the English language.
Valid and current Class D drivers license with the ability to obtain, within 6 months of hire, a Class A drivers license with an air break endorsement.
Basic knowledge of electricity, pole line materials and Underground Residential Distribution (URD) equipment is desired.

The position requires the ability to use and operate motorized vehicles and equipment, common hand and power tools, mobile radios and telephones; lift and/or move up to 100 pounds; effective audio-visual discrimination and perception; color vision adequate to identify red, yellow and green; and hearing sufficient to understand verbal direction and to detect abnormal equipment operation and alarms.

Regular and irregular shift work is required, depending on staffing and workload. Shifts are normally 8 hours in duration, 40 hours weekly, but may be extended in the event of emergency, personnel shortage, workload, or work in progress. May be required to work on some Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Work is sometimes required under adverse or unusual conditions such as, but not limited to, cold, hot, wet, dark, dusty, noisy and cramped surroundings, in all weather conditions, and at all hours of the day. Must perform duties independently or as a crew member.
